Baptism, the door to life and to the kingdom of God, is the first sacrament of the New Law, which Christ offered to all, that they might have eternal life. He later entrusted this sacrament and the Gospel to his Church, when he told his apostles: 'Go, make disciples of all nations, and baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.'" General Introduction, the Rite of Baptism for Children
In baptism a person is set free from the powers of sin, darkness, and death and is given new life in Christ. This is the sacrament that opens the door to the life of Heaven for believers and is necessary for salvation.
