Jesus began his work on earth by preaching repentance, saying "Turn away from sin and believe in the gospel." (Mark 1:15) This call echoes to the present through the Sacrament of Confession.

In Confession one takes the opportunity to go before a priest, who represents Christ, and names their sins in kind and number and receives absolution from the priest. This is an experience of humility and of mercy. In humbling oneself by naming their sins, the person confessing their sins allow themselves to be lifted up by the mercy of God.
